Abstract
Christian Kracht’s debut novel Faserland, which depicts a young man’s travels through the German fatherland, presents a culture-specific account of Germany during the late nineties. Although the novel has already been translated into multiple languages, an English version of the work has yet to be published. The narrator’s experience in Germany paints a portrait of the country and its culture and will therefore be preserved in an English translation of parts of the novel to increase the English-speaking reader’s knowledge of German culture. Along with providing an English translation of parts of the novel, I shall also discuss translation theories used for translating Faserland into English, as well as issues encountered while translating the novel. In addition to an English translation, I shall also analyze aspects of the novel’s relevance and reception in both German and North American English-speaking contexts.
