Effect of Elasticity of Viscoelastic Polymer Flooding on Sweep Efficiency

  • Author(s) / Creator(s)
  • Polymer fluids help sweeping more residual oil left in rocks, due to their unique rheological properties. Polymer flooding could avoid problems such as viscous fingering due to the differences in relative permeability of oil and water. In general, higher polymer molecular weights, a broader range of polymer molecular weights and higher polymer concentration help improving flooding performance. Viscoelasticity of polymer solution could also improve sweep efficiency. Results of the polymer flooding experiments indicated that, at constant shear viscosity and concentration of polymer, the polymer solution with higher elasticity has significantly higher resistance to flow through the sand-pack than the solution with lower elasticity resulting into higher sweep efficiency.
