This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Fall 2021
The concept of ‘winter cities’ speaks to a particular relationship between place and winter. However, winter cities are largely under examined in urban research, particularly Canadian cities. This thesis asks what type of place is a winter city and what types of placemaking occur in this context?...

A Model for the Solubility of Anhydrite in H2O-NaCl fluids from 25 to 800 °C, 0.1 to 1400 MPa, and 0 to 60 wt% NaCl: Applications to Hydrothermal Ore-forming Systems
DownloadFall 2021
Anhydrite (CaSO4) is a common gangue mineral in hydrothermal ore-forming systems, though currently there is no robust numerical model for the solubility of anhydrite in H2O-NaCl hydrothermal fluids. Here, we present a thermodynamic model for the solubility of anhydrite in saline aqueous fluids...

At the precipice of the Great Oxygen Crash: Redox-sensitive metal geochemistry in the Paleoproterozoic Onega Basin
DownloadSpring 2021
The middle Paleoproterozoic era (~2200–1800 million years ago) was host to some of the most significant perturbations in Earth’s elemental cycles, including the largest ever excursion of carbon isotope ratios in sedimentary rocks, known as the Lomagundi-Jatuli Event. This event has been linked to...

Calibration and Validation of a SWAT model for the quantification of water provision ecosystem service for the Conservation Area of Guanacaste
DownloadFall 2021
Water is considered a cross-cutting resource for all the ecosystem services (ES) types, namely: for the provision of drinking water and food; regulation through flood control; guarantee of a suitable habitat for fauna and flora; and inspiration for many cultures and their intangible heritage...

Spring 2021
In Canada, federal and provincial governments have implemented carbon pricing to reduce carbon emissions. One effect of a price on carbon is increasing the cost of using private vehicles, which may reduce mobility and increase the risk of social exclusion, especially where car dependence is high....

Spring 2021
This thesis presents two studies employing computational approaches to tephra source attribution and tephra volume estimation. Glass major oxide data was used to train 11 classification algorithms. Each classifier probabilistically attributed tephra chemistries to one of ten volcanic sources from...

Constraining the Source Craters of the Martian Meteorites: Shock Analysis and Geologic Mapping of Candidate Craters
DownloadSpring 2021
The ~143 martian meteorites serve as the only rock samples from Mars that are presently available for study in a laboratory setting. These predominantly igneous samples are sourced from the near-surface units adjacent to craters formed during random, hypervelocity impacts of asteroids on the...

Fall 2021
Cryptotephra research is one of the fastest growing subfields of tephrochronology. Here the extraction, processing, and analytical techniques required for cryptotephra studies are reviewed and assessed in detail. A workflow is suggested depending on the site’s characteristics to improve the...

Development of supraglacial drainage systems on the Devon Ice Cap and its connection to the formation of near-surface ice layers within the shallow firn
DownloadSpring 2021
Increased mass loss from the Canadian Arctic ice caps is associated with regional increases in the summer mean glacier surface temperature and the annual number of melt days. As a result of these changes , snow and ice melt are likely to occur at higher elevations and become more widespread,...

Spring 2021
This research was motivated by a current lack of systematic information, pairing inclusion chemistry (major, minor, and trace element) to host diamond isotopic data (δ13C, δ15N, N abundance) regarding the Snap Lake kimberlitedyke. The Snap Lake kimberlite dyke is located on the southern Slave...
