This decommissioned ERA site remains active temporarily to support our final migration steps to https://ualberta.scholaris.ca, ERA's new home. All new collections and items, including Spring 2025 theses, are at that site. For assistance, please contact erahelp@ualberta.ca.
Theses and Dissertations
This collection contains theses and dissertations of graduate students of the University of Alberta. The collection contains a very large number of theses electronically available that were granted from 1947 to 2009, 90% of theses granted from 2009-2014, and 100% of theses granted from April 2014 to the present (as long as the theses are not under temporary embargo by agreement with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies). IMPORTANT NOTE: To conduct a comprehensive search of all UofA theses granted and in University of Alberta Libraries collections, search the library catalogue at www.library.ualberta.ca - you may search by Author, Title, Keyword, or search by Department.
To retrieve all theses and dissertations associated with a specific department from the library catalogue, choose 'Advanced' and keyword search "university of alberta dept of english" OR "university of alberta department of english" (for example). Past graduates who wish to have their thesis or dissertation added to this collection can contact us at erahelp@ualberta.ca.

Degradation of Naphthenic Acids from Oil Sands Process Water and Groundwater Using Chemical Oxidation
DownloadFall 2013
Naphthenic acids attribute to the toxicity of oil sands process water. Naphthenic acids quantification by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy depends significantly on which standard is used and Merichem naphthenic acids are a good standard. Naphthenic acids can be removed from oil sands...

Spring 2011
In order to determine the degradation of Naphthenic Acids (NAs) in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), a series of semi-batch ozonation experiments have been conducted resulting in a maximum reduction of NAs greater than 99%. Compared to the high NAs removal, the reduction of both COD and...

Degradation of Recalcitrant Organics in Oil Sands Process Water (OSPW) Using Combined Electro-Oxidation and Electrochemically Activated Peroxymonosulfate (EO-PMS)
DownloadFall 2021
Abdelrahman, Ali Satti Abdellatif
In northern Alberta, the bitumen extraction process from oil sands ores consumes large amounts of water, resulting in the generation of huge volumes of oil sand process water (OSPW). Currently, the treatment of OSPW is considered a major challenge facing the oil sands industry. Moreover, among...

Spring 2012
This study focuses on two issues of open channel flow modeling. First the convergence behavior of preconditioned Krylov subspace methods: Generalized Minimal Residual (GMRES) and Bi-Conjugate Gradient Stabilized (BiCGSTAB) is investigated for the open channel flow model River2D with Jacobi,...

Spring 2014
Current design procedures for extended shear tab connections tend to be conservative and often do not include considerations for axial load. To address these problems, an investigation into the behaviour of extended shear tabs was completed by testing 23 full-scale specimens. Both unstiffened and...

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH PRESSURE-HIGH TEMPERATURE WELLBORE SIMULATOR FOR INVESTIGATION OF THE IMPACT OF CYCLIC STRESSES ON THE INTEGRITY OF WELLBORE SECTIONS WITH CEMENT/CASING INTERFACES
DownloadSpring 2022
An ideal cement job is expected to provide a perfect zonal isolation during the entire production life and even after the abandonment of the oil and gas wells. Variations of downhole stress conditions due to, for example, pressure cycles during the multistage hydraulic fracturing operations and...
-
Design and Optimization of Tunnel Guidance Systems for Tunneling subject to Constrained Space and Limited Visibility
DownloadFall 2016
Modern construction, which is part of the whole industrialization process, evolves to be more both cost-efficient and time-efficient, meanwhile still preserving high quality. The core of the process is to extract and migrate precious body of knowledge and practical experience of the craftsmen...

Design and Performance Evaluation of Road Base Courses Comprised of Asphalt Emulsion and Asphaltenes Derived from Alberta Oil sands
DownloadFall 2023
Stabilization of granular base course materials has proven to be an effective method for enhancing the performance of pavement structure. Among the various methods used in this field, asphalt emulsion stabilization stands out as a widely employed technique that offers several benefits, including...
