  1. Stories of the Unquiet Dead: Ukrainian Graveyards as the Place of Change [Download]

Title: Stories of the Unquiet Dead: Ukrainian Graveyards as the Place of Change
    Creator: Natalie Kononenko
Description: Once seen as survivals of paganism, those aspects of folk belief that differ from canonical religion are now called vernacular religion. They are seen as expressions of the lived faith of parishioners. Previous studies of vernacular religion have examined how people adapt religious canon to their needs, how they make sense of religious faith, and how they can use sacred objects for what the church would call magical purposes. Fieldwork conducted in the Canadian prairies under the auspices of the Sanctuary Project shows that vernacular religion can do more that make sense of religious canon: it can impact church practice. As parishioners change their definition of personhood and see stillborn babies as human, as they come to see suicide as illness rather than sin, their new beliefs can affect the burial practices of their church, forcing it to include previously excluded persons in the sanctified ground of the cemetery. Change comes easier to cemeteries than to the church building and objects donated in memory of deceased young people cannot be reclaimed by their donors once a church is closed and deconsecrated. The fate of these objects is currently being contested.

Title: Blending classroom instruction with online homework: A study of student perceptions of computer-assisted L2 learning
    Creator: Sagarra, Nuria
Description: This study investigates the impact of an online workbook on the attitudes of 245 second language (L2) Spanish learners toward this pedagogical tool over two consecutive semesters. The treatment consisted of four hours of classroom instruction and one set of online homework per week, during two consecutive semesters. Students’ attitudes toward the electronic workbook were measured by means of a survey administered after eight months of exposure to the workbook. The qualitative data of the survey was compared to quantitative data from two different language assessment tests. The results of these tests indicated a significant increase in grammar scores. These results are consonant with the positive findings of student perceptions about the online workbook obtained in this and previous studies, emphasizing its benefits in terms of accessibility to the material, user-friendliness, and instant error feedback. More importantly, most students praised the usefulness of the online workbook for language learning, particularly in the areas of grammar and vocabulary acquisition. Despite participants’ mostly positive attitudes, the survey also revealed some negative aspects of the use of the online workbook, such as the amount of time needed to complete the online exercises. This paper addresses these issues, and provides suggestions to overcome this type of problem.

  6. International nursing leadership related to the drugs phenomenon: A case study of the partnership experience between the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and the University of Alberta-Faculty of Nursing [Download]

Title: International nursing leadership related to the drugs phenomenon: A case study of the partnership experience between the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) and the University of Alberta-Faculty of Nursing
    Creator: Wright, M.G.M.
Description: In this article, the authors discuss the value of international health in advancing the nursing profession through the development of strong leadership in the area of drug demand reduction. Paradigms for nursing leadership are briefly reviewed and linked to the development of the \"International Nursing Leadership Institutes\" organized by the Inter-American Commission for the Control of Drug Abuse (CICAD). The \"International Nursing Leadership Institutes\" have facilitated the implementation of Phase III of the CICAD Schools of Nursing Project: a) planning and implementing the first \"International Research Capacity-Building Program for Nurses to Study the Drug Phenomenon in Latin America\", b) development of Regional and National Strategic Plans for Nursing Professionals in the Area of Demand Reduction in Latin America, and c) preparation of a document that provides guidelines on how to include drug content into undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula. The article also brings reflections directly from several of the participants in the first International Research Capacity-Building Program for Nurses to Study the Drug Phenomenon in the Americas, offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. These reflections demonstrate the multiplicity of ways in which this capacity-building program has made it easier for these members of Latin American Schools of Nursing to show leadership in the area of drug demand reduction.

Title: International research capacity-building programs for nurses to study the drug phenomenon in Latin America: challenges and perspectives
    Creator: Wright, Maria G.M.
Description: The First International Research Capacity-Building Program for Nurses to Study the Drug Phenomenon in the Americas is a result of a partnership between the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Faculty of Nursing in the University of Alberta, with financial support from the Government of Canada. The program was divided into two parts. The first part of the program was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It involved capacity-building in research methodologies at the Faculty of Nursing, which lead to the preparation of four multi-centric research proposals for drug demand reduction in the home countries of the eleven participants in the program. The second part of the program was related to the implementation of multi-centric research proposals in seven countries in Latin America and in Canada. This program presented expertise in research methodology to members of Latin American Schools of Nursing and introduced Latin American expertise to members of a Canadian Faculty of Nursing. The International Research Capacity-Building Program for Nurses to Study the Drug Phenomenon in the Americas has fostered the kind of inter-cultural respect and mutual appreciation necessary to confront the global health problem of the abuse of both licit and illicit drugs.
